Comprehension for High School

Strengthening Inference, Interpretation and Deep Understanding

At our Centre, we focus on building strong reading comprehension skills that help students interpret inferred meanings and understand texts with clarity. Through specific, syllabus driven outcomes, students’ progress from literal interpretation to critical analysis. Teaching outcomes are organised into distinctive stages of learning and focus on :

Decoding

Evaluating language features

Exploring concepts

Analysing Form, Structure and Context (Years 11–12)

Having a solid foundation in comprehension helps to develop the skills and ability which are essential across all subjects – including mathematics – and forms the foundation for confident learning. These skills become especially important when students face the high expectations of NAPLAN, Selective School and Scholarship exams.

Program Highlights

Understanding Inference

Students learn what inference is, why it matters, and how writers use language, structure and tone to communicate meaning beyond the literal text.

Identifying Implied Meaning

Tutors teach students how to locate clues within a text, draw logical conclusions, and recognise the deeper layers of meaning required for high‑level comprehension.

Explaining Inferences Clearly

Students practise expressing their understanding both verbally and in written form - a key requirement for NAPLAN, school assessments and HSC responses.

Aligned with the NSW English Syllabus

All lessons follow the NSW curriculum, supporting students in:
